WHAT IS INSOMNIA?
A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF INSOMNIA
INSOMNIA
the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep
once in the dream state
The number of hours a person is able to sleep, or how long
it takes to fall asleep, does not define insomnia. Each individual
will vary in his or her need for sleep. Insomnia is the perception
or complaint of inadequate or poor-quality sleep due to:
- The difficulty or inability to fall asleep.
- Waking up frequently during the night and struggling to
return to sleep.
- Waking up too early in the morning still feeling tired.
- Feeling un-rested after what should have been a good night's
sleep.
Insomnia can be classified as:
Transient insomnia
Short term, lasting from one night to a few weeks.
Intermittent insomnia
Occurring from time to time.
Chronic insomnia
Constant, or lasting most nights for many months or more.
WHAT CAUSES INSOMNIA?
Although women, the elderly, and those with a history of
depression tend to be more predisposed than others, there
are a number of things that can lead to insomnia.
Transient and intermittent insomnia occur in people who are
temporarily experiencing one or more of the following:
- Stress, anxiety, or other medical condition.
- Changes in environmental surroundings, such as noise or
extreme temperatures.
- Sleep/wake schedule challenges such as with shift work
or traveling.
- The use and side effects of medication.
- Substance abuse such as alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine.
Although it is more complex, chronic insomnia can simply
be the result of a combination of factors including; underlying
chronic physical or mental disorders, genetic makeup, and
hormonal fluctuations (in women). But more often than not,
chronic insomnia is caused by chronic stress, depression,
or behavioural factors, including the misuse of caffeine,
alcohol, or other substances.
Even diet, particularly if one is sensitive to fluctuations
in blood sugar, can greatly affect a person's ability
to fall asleep, and remain sleeping soundly throughout the
night.
IMPLICATIONS OF IMSOMNIA
More than a minor inconvenience, failing
to get enough sleep causes malaise, poor concentration, moodiness,
ill health, and accidental deaths
The true impact of insomnia on quality of life is probably
impossible to calculate, but that there is human suffering
as a result of sleep problems is beyond question.
While short-term insomnia may be of little consequence, prolonged
lack of sleep can impair memory and judgment, cause irritability
and other mood disorders, interfere with concentration, make
it difficult to learn new things or perform daily tasks, and
reduce the ability of the immune system to prevent illness.
- Since the human body does most of its repair work at night,
such as healing wounds and fighting off infection, there
can be serious health implications as a result of not getting
enough sleep.
- People suffering from insomnia often wake up tired, suffering
from morning headaches, daytime fatigue, and muscle pain.
They may not be as productive at work or school and can
become frustrated because they just can't seem to get things
done.
D.G. Barstow states in the Gale Encyclopaedia of Medicine
(1999) that, by not getting enough sleep, you increase
the risk of injury at both home and work, and even when
commuting between the two.
Sleepy automobile drivers are responsible
for more than 300,000 car accidents annually, many of them
fatal. These accidents account for at least ten percent of
all accidents reported (Graves, 1998).
True, not all insomnia sufferers have the
same experience,
but why take the chance?

TREATMENT OF INSOMNIA
Experts suggest consulting a physician as the first step
in dealing with insomnia or any other destructive sleep pattern.
There's an arsenal of prescription and over the counter products
that can be recommended, any one of which may put you to sleep.
Drugs however, are often addictive, and tend to leave you
over-tired and sluggish in the morning. Drugs treat dysfunction
(symptom) only, not the disorder itself, and falling asleep
because you can't avoid it often leaves you feeling dependent
and powerless, which can simply add to the problems already
experienced by an insomniac.
Sleeping pills are not the only treatment for insomnia. In
most cases, the use of sleeping pills is not beneficial at
all. Sleeping pills can only be used to help treat transient
insomnia and cannot be used to treat chronic insomnia.
Therapies are most effective as an alternative to sleeping
pills, and today there are many safe and natural options available
without the undesirable side effects associated with the use
of drugs.
"The best way to treat Insomnia is by
correcting
the imbalances and impurities in the body."
DreamEasyHerbal Sleep Aid, when taken as directed,
helps correct these imbalances and impurities naturally
one capsule twice daily with plenty of water.
More than 60 million Americans, suffer the debilitating effects
of insomnia, yet many ignore the problem. Studies show that
people who suffer from insomnia typically wait about twelve
years before they seek help. They feel that sleep problems
are a part of life, and that it's something they need to endure,
or be able to solve on their own. More than half of people
suffering from chronic insomnia never even talk with a health
professional about their inability to get a good night of
sleep.
We now understand the causes of sleep disorders much better
than in the past and we have improved treatments available.
So if you are concerned about whether your physician can help,
be reassured, they are far better equipped to help you get
your sleep patterns back on track than ever before.
While there are many treatment options available, it's often
hard to decide when poor and inadequate sleep needs attention
